Xing in Chinese Martial Arts and Tai Chi

"Xing/ Hsing" - in Chinese martial arts, 'form' or 'shape,' referring to animal/ creature styles as well as natural elemental styles, such as Tiger, Leopard, Snake, Crane, Dragon, Monkey, Roc, Bear, Butterfly, Elephant, Wind, Water, Lightning, Earth, Fire, etc...one of the hallmarks of CMA training, like a form of Shamanism really...3 Levels to Xing- 1) Fitness, attaining the strength, endurance, flexibility, etc...to even begin to properly perform the techs., 1-3 years of disciplined training, 2) Accuracy- properly performing the techniques, forms and applications- a skilled and enthusiastic teacher is key here, 3) Essence- after long and proper training, including most importantly, living the art in daily life, the 'essence' and 'spirit' of the style enters one's heart...study of nature is key, as well as stripping away all un-essentials...this is the level of the beginning of mastery- at least 10 years to get to this level...there is much more which differentiates 'tiger claw' from 'dragon claw' than just the physical technique...keep in mind, "it can take ten years to become a real student," and video is only a supplement, it can never transmit essence and spirit...train well! -pictured, American Grizzly Bears demonstrating perfect “Bear Xing” technique.
